How to play 5-3-2

James Graham14 Aug 2013 - 07:49

A great overview on the 5-3-2 or 3-2-3-2 formation.

Hi All,

Many of you may be aware the England Hockey have been looking to encourage a standardised formation for grass roots clubs and youth teams. That formation is really 3-2-3-2 (a slight deviation from the original 5-3-2 formation). Note that the numbers are from front to back - so 3 outright forwards, 2 inside forwards, 3 halves and 2 full backs.

The men's 2s are now looking to move away from the 4-4-2 we played last season and will be changing things to reflect the new system. We have trialed the formation in 2 friendlies in the last two weeks and people are slowly becoming used to the changes.

I have found and attached a PDF here which gives a great overview of the system and provides details on the relative positions, responsibilities and requirements for the system.

I would encourage everyone at the club to read through the document to get a better understanding of how tactics, formations and team work can help us win games.

Regards,

James
