the game

‘Remember remember the 5th of November’. On paper it looked like this was one to forget but in reality it was a good performance from the Men’s 3s.
The change of month brought about a change of temperature and although the sun was shining an icy blast was whistling down from the Artic. This did not deter the Bedford shoppers though and heavy traffic meant that half the team were delayed and Shefford and Sandy lined up with only 8 people on the pitch. As the whistle blew the rest of the team turned up and although the team was only hampered for a short while, it was enough for Bedford to take an early lead.
The match was always going to be a struggle for the away team, whilst Bedford had a good blend of youth and experience, Shefford had only two players born in the 20th century, and one of those was old enough to be the others’ dad. This said the team settled down and with Paul Angell and the Pennington brothers running central midfield the game was a good mix of attack and counter attack. James Steer was called into action a few times and produced some very good reaction saves whilst the attack of Alistair Wood, Zach Christodoulou and Jamie Parkes forced a series of penalty corners which unfortunately the hapless Gully failed to convert.
After 25 minutes Bedford scored a second but still S&S pressed on, Elliot Wood making some good runs up the left side of midfield and debutant Toby Morlidge impressing on the right, backed up by Harry Waby. One of these attacks nearly produced a goal when the ball flashed across the D to just miss the outstretched stick of Parkes on the far post, a year later it would have been converted but unfortunately couldn’t wait that long until Parkes had grown an extra foot in height. Shortly before half-time Bedford converted a third.
The restart saw the same game pattern, Shefford tried to press whilst Bedford were resolute in defence and broke swiftly on the counterattack. One of these brought them their 4th goal when the 20th century defence of Dan Coverdale and Gully were outpaced by youth leaving Steer with no chance against 2 attackers. Shortly after, a S&S penalty corner saw a change of ball striker and Ethan Pennington struck home from the top of the D.
Bedford’s last 2 goals were again from counter attacks, both were well struck and although Steer managed to get a glove on one, both wouldn’t have disgraced a match played at a higher level. Although the team went down 6-1 it was a terrific performance from the youngsters, Marcus Pennington thrown in central midfield and Morlidge on his debut were strong , the forward line were busy and hassled the defence, Angell and Elliot W ran their socks off and Coverdale and Waby in defence did a superb job against a swift and organised attack. All good stuff for the future
