Another chilly afternoon at fortress Sandy for the men’s 4s with the opposition only making the short journey from Stevenage for a 4.15 push back.
The game began slowly with both sides launching attacks in equal measure, Hall and Maxted contained any early Stevenage pressure with Barden and France (the man with the golden stick) providing the early legs in midfield. The 4s getting the breakthrough with Mark Whatham guiding the ball across the line following a tidy set of passes from the Shefford youngsters. A second followed soon after with Maxted’s strike finding the back of the net despite a brave effort from the Stevenage keeper. Stevenage ended the half on the attack with several short corners and Coverdale clearing a couple off the line to keep the advantage with Shefford at half time.
A much more well behaved team talk this week fuelled by a packet of Bourbon biscuits allowed a few changes of personal as the second half began. Both sides knowing that the next goal would be crucial for the game.
Again Stevenage attacked strongly with the Shefford defence more or less holding firm. Barden jnr bossing the right flank in both attack and defence with Tom Joanna providing constant strong support from the left wing and linking up well with Gully to launch several attacks. Shefford bagged the 3rd goal with Maxted again hitting the back board following great work from Ben Stone. Stevenage though hit back straight away after a defensive ‘balls up’ led to a penalty flick. Luckily for the Shefford faithful though as Whatham again appeared up top to bang in number 4 , Prothero also coming to the rescue in the final seconds to seal a determined win for the 4s.
Thanks to Trevor Bridger and Chris Joannou for umpiring.
