A return to action for the men’s 4s after a satisfying winter break full of bike accidents, visiting Santa, sliced fingers and copious amounts of After8s.
The team welcomed debutant Oli Morlidge playing his first senior game and a return for Austin Keep who was available at late notice. After a discussion on if it was orange vs greens or tangerine vs mints the game got underway. Clearly many shirts had shrunk in the wash over the Christmas period too as black is apparently not a flattering colour.
A blistering start saw Shefford pile forward from the off, with less than 2 minutes on the clock Barden snr smashed one into the D for Darran France to deflect past the keeper. Shefford continued strongly with any St Albans attacks being tidied up by the Shefford defence. Then a substitution saw Oli Morlidge come on as a right winger, within two minutes he announced himself to the team by smashing the ball into the backboard for a debut goal!
2-0 at half time and a team talk including Jaffa cakes , countless interruptions and schoolboy style giggling from Barden snr and Gully.
As the second half began it was clear St Albans we’re not going to roll over as they launched a series of early attacks, Barden jnr coming to the rescue with a goal line clearance and Prothero kicking strongly during ten minutes of continued St Albans pressure.
Shefford weathered the storm however with Tom Joanna putting in a sterling display on the left wing, Ben Stone causing chaos as he led the line for the Shefford attacks and France unlucky not add to the score as the teams 3rd was ruled out for an earlier foul.
However a solid 2-0 win to begin 2019 and a potentially exciting few months ahead for the 4s ??
