Stone makes his debut in convincing win

The Men’s 4s took on Stevenage in the late game at Sandy, after the warm up of the 1st XI game some of the crowd stayed to watch a very very different game.

The 4s left slightly depleted by the late call up of Darran France to the 3s but buoyed by the unexpected debut of Ben Stone who handled himself well when met with the question “Hello, who are you? ….Oh you’re playing for us!”

The game started as the rain stopped and it was clear Stevenage were very well organised , a fairly even first ten minutes was broken when Alistair Wood played in Dan Coverdale who rounded the keeper and finished with a tidy reverse to score his first goal since about 1905. Shefford then enjoyed a good spell of pressure with Toby Morlidge making several strong runs down the right flank, well supported by Zach Christodoulou playing at right back and having yet another strong performance in the back four. Shefford doubled their lead with a Grant Maxted thunderbolt from a short corner only for Stevenage to pull one back with a short of their own 30 seconds before the end of the half.

Stevenage started the second period strongly and set out to press the ball from the off, the Stevenage captain pulling the strings well from midfield. However a good run by Alistair Wood led to another short corner that was put away with gusto from the evergreen Gully. Shefford then enjoyed a good remainder of the game with Ben Stone showing some real potential as he made some positive runs and held the ball up well, Lewis Barden causing several problems for the opposition defence and Jack Prothero also fighting on well after taking a real stinger to his left bum cheek!

As the game finished there was still time for umpire Trevor Bridger to randomly steal Coverdale’s trousers and for everyone to retreat to the bar for some well-earned warmth!
