Shefford and sandy men’s 1s started the weekend looking to improve on last weeks performance. Despite gaining a tight victory over Cambridge nomads, Shefford found themselves frustrated at their own basics and had trained hard in the week to fix the issue.
Shefford failed to hit the ground running coming under early pressure from Cambridge City, who entered the fixture third from bottom in the table. After 20 minutes Shefford were 2-0 down, a well run short corner finding its way past Pete and an unfortunate deflection from Jack Chiswell’s tackle set up the Cambridge striker for a well taken volley at the back post.
Shefford gathered themselves and began to move the ball with a lot more pace and purpose, a few quick attacking moves lead to nothing but It was only a matter of time for Shefford. Jamie Bellingham was in great form at the centre of defence breaking down several City counter attacks. Two goals from Alyn Meredith just before half time put Shefford level with all the momentum in their favour.
After half time Shefford flew out the blocks moving the ball excellently around the back and into midfield. Liam Stevens put the team in front winning the ball high up the pitch and linking well with Joe Purslow before slotting the ball in at the near post. Doug Dawson and Stuart Robson continued to dominate the centre of the pitch throughout the half; Doug playing Liam through in the crowded D to put Shefford two up with a clean reverse strike from short range into the empty left side of the goal. Tom Pateman had a chance to put the game beyond doubt ,after being put through 1 on 1 with the keeper, taking the ball just past him and slamming it into the backboard... of the spare goal.
Late in the half Cambridge struck from another short to give them a slither of hope. Shefford, however, chose to keep the ball and shut out the game holding their one goal lead to the final whistle. This was a pleasing performance from the green and blacks as they showed real character to come back from two goals down to win the game. Results elsewhere going in favour of S&S, this victory leaves them top of the Div 1 table.
